The Holiday, Movie: Tour Rosehill Cottage

the holiday house

The cottage is the home of Kate Winslet's character, who conducts a home swap with Cameron Diaz's LA mogul, and thus provides the setting for Diaz to fall in love with the dreamy Jude Law amidst her comedy dealings with the English countryside. This Airbnb feels like a larger version of the cottage from The Holiday, with space for 12 in six sumptuous, recently revamped bedrooms. It's located on a 2,400-acre estate and surrounded by beautiful woodland, so it's a perfect spot for a big group getaway in the country. The large farmhouse-style kitchen and dining area are highlights, as is the hidden hot tub awaiting outside. While generally all sets are pulled down after filming is complete, such as the Forrest Gump house or the ancestral home of James Bond, this one seems such a shame. Credit is due to the set designers for creating such a wonderful-looking house in such a short amount of time.

“The Power of the Dog” ranch was purposefully built for the movie

However, Columbia Pictures did provide set shots where you can see the cottage in more detail. “It was a real tourist attraction while it was there.” Despite the fact that it was in a remote area, many people went to see it each day. Anyone who has seen ‘The Holiday’ will undoubtedly recognize the English cottage that prominently features in the movie.

The house that inspired it is real, though

So we took things a step further and tracked down a few of the other memorable The Holiday filming locations — including an architectural gem designed by lauded architect Richard Neutra that may have caught your eye. While Rosehill Cottage might not be real, the humble little brick house that it was based on does exist — and recently got some new owners who weren’t aware of its enduring popularity before moving in. Amazingly, it took production just a couple of weeks to construct and a total of four weeks to fully landscape and make sure the house and its surrounding area looked genuinely like a 200-year-old property. Sorry to be the bearer of genuinely bad news but Rosehill Cottage doesn’t exist. From the impressive open-plan kitchen and chic, yet cozy living area to the state-of-the-art gym and impressive gated driveway landscaped to perfection, Amanda’s house is pretty much the perfect getaway home. However, despite the recognizable exterior, if you look at photos from inside the house, you’ll notice that these aren’t the super-posh, modern interiors we see in the movie.

THE BUILDING OF ROSEHILL COTTAGE

The Tuscan-style property that played the role of Amanda’s house in The Holiday is located at 1883 Orlando Road in San Marino, a small town in Los Angeles County, Calif. and is the former home of esteemed architect Wallace Neff. The exterior scenes where we see Amanda and Ethan’s breakup, Miles and Iris’s first meeting, and her adorable leap for joy upon discovering the property has a pool, were all filmed on location at a stunning seven-bedroom property in California. Both Amanda and Iris’s houses are taken straight out of my letters to Santa, and look like my Christmas real estate wishes come true. So, naturally, I had to track them down and see where one might find the picture-perfect The Holiday houses in real life. In the DVD commentary, Meyers and Hutman say the modern furniture didn’t look right in the cottage sets, though. It began to look too much like the decorating in Amanda’s house, so they went in a more traditional direction.

As Rosehill Cottage was just a set the entire ‘cottage’ was pulled down and demolished after filming was complete. Anyone visiting the location today would only find an empty field, as it was previously. Taking inspiration from Honeysuckle Cottage, an English country cottage located in Holmbury St Mary, the team began building a house. The house, landscaping, wall, and road leading to the cottage were all built in just two weeks.

This idyllic 300-year-old property is so reminiscent of Honeysuckle Cottage that previous guests have raved about their Holiday-inspired stays here. Equally popular are the country walks taken from the front door, with plenty of cosy pubs and restaurants to try, and the stunning views over the Derbyshire Dales and historic town of Wirksworth. A secluded, sunny garden and log burner inside make this a treat at any time of year. Many of the character features Iris fell for can be found at Honeysuckle Cottage. There's a cosy inglenook fireplace with Jotul log burner in the lounge, exposed timbers and oak joinery throughout, exposed brickwork in the bedrooms and leaded light windows. The quintessentially English cottage in Surrey that inspired Christmas classic, The Holiday, was once a real-life holiday home available to rent on Airbnb.

It’s the former home of lauded architect Wallace Neff

Back at Iris’s house… This hallway from the kitchen leads to a room we see very little of in the movie. At first, the swap seems uneven; Iris revels in the luxury of Amanda’s L.A. Home, while Amanda suffers a series of disappointments in Surrey. Things turn around for Amanda when she meets Iris’ brother Graham (Jude Law). Both Amanda and Graham intend to have a one-night stand, but a romance develops. Things get complicated as only one day remains until Amanda’s flight is scheduled to leave to L.A.

The bespoke, craftsmen-built, handpainted kitchen with oil-fired Aga is enough to impress any potential suitor, while underfloor heating makes for cosy movie nights in. The interiors for this house in The Holiday were built on a separate soundstage. The real rooms are much more traditional, with most of the original details intact. Because many of the shots were so tight, it was often difficult to get a good view of the interior.

Notice how the mismatched furniture makes the room feel real and adds so much personality. The White Horse, Graham’s preferred watering hole and place where he reunites with Amanda after thinking she had gone back to LA, is a very real country pub also located in the village of Shere. The scenes around Rosehill cottage were filmed in some of the most photographed villages in Surrey, England, including Godalming and Shere. For anyone taking notes, that’s nowhere near the home used for Amanda’s house but hey, movie magic! The 22-room home which was owned for 40 years by the late comedienne Phyllis Dillier, was chosen for its ‘Old Hollywood’ vibe.

Anyone who has spent any time looking through the TV & Movie houses section of House and History will know many movie homes are nothing but sets. Just like the house from Forrest Gump, or the home in Practical Magic, ‘The Holiday’ house was built from scratch. From this angle, you can see the cute, little alcove across the room. What do you suppose is in the basket on the stair landing? Looks kind of like firewood…perhaps for the upstairs bedroom fireplace?

Because it was just a shell, it was torn down after filming. This lovely cottage in Wales is the ideal base from which to explore the Brecon Beacons National Park, taking in lakes and mountains on a romantic break or trip with friends. Indoors, a muted, earthy colour palette makes for the most soothing of settings for your stay, while the wood and stone exterior creates an image of fairy tale charm, complete with fragrant crawling roses. In 2018, Honeysuckle Cottage was on the market for £650,000 via Hamptons, and some four years later the property was available to book via Airbnb.

Rosehill Cottage is the backdrop for a number of scenes throughout the movie. Mainly those featuring Cameron Diaz as Amanda Woods, the American staying in England. This house appears to be built of stone/rock, doesn’t it? It looks so much larger in this professional shot than it did in the movie!

Ummm, are you getting a bit suspicious yet about this cottage? The couple then decided to bank on the house’s fame and put their Honeysuckle Cottage up on AirBnb as a vacation rental. The news set the internet ablaze, with thousands of media outlets announcing that you can stay at The Holiday cottage (or, as some publications said, you can “go fall in love with Jude Law” in an idyllic setting. Last week when I told you the California house from The Holiday is on the market, you guys told me I should feature Rosehill Cottage next. I think we all fell in love with the charming stone house where Kate Winslet’s character Iris lived.

And the unique architectural details and exquisite exterior make a little more sense after learning that the house was previously home to lauded architect Wallace Neff — who designed and built it for himself and his family. Worth well over $10 million, the 10,324-square-foot mansion made famous by the 2006 movie has an impressive total of 7 bedrooms and 7 baths. If you too have fallen head over heels for Amanda’s gorgeous Tuscan-style home in Los Angeles, you’ll be happy to hear that it’s an actual home and not the product of some clever studio set with CGI slapped on top of it. So today let’s take a look at how they built it for the movie and managed to make it look like it had been there forever. Honeysuckle Cottage, in the London commuter village of Holmbury St Mary, inspired Iris' home in the movie. The crew based the specially-designed set for Rosehill Cottage on the three-bedroom period property, recreating it brick for brick at a studio in London. For those who haven’t seen the movie, the story follows two women having guy-trouble who swap homes in each other’s countries. One of those homes is Rosehill Cottage, a beautiful property located in the English countryside.

While in the cab, leaving for the airport, Amanda realizes she loves Graham, so she runs back to the house, where she recently left Graham, and hugs him. Though there’s now a bank in its place, the video store where Iris and Miles browse the shelves to find movies on Arthur’s list was once a real Blockbuster video located in Brentwood, LA. Arthur’s property is located on Rockingham Avenue in Brentwood California. The property used for exterior shots is called The Mill House and it stands overlooking the River Wey in Tilford, Surrey. It has five bedrooms, a drawing-room, a family room, a breakfast room, a cloakroom, a study, and more.

The Tuscan-style property that played the role of Amanda’s house in The Holiday is located at 1883 Orlando Road in San Marino, a small town in Los Angeles County, Calif. and is the former home of esteemed architect Wallace Neff. The cottage from The Holiday has become a phenomenon, summing up the best of the English cottage look and creating a dream of Christmas in the countryside for thousands. All the features are there including wooden beams, an open fire, the slightly shabby country kitchen of our dreams, faded chintzes and that tiny, beautiful roll-top bath. Cottages come into their own in winter, and seeing first Kate Winslet and then Cameron Diaz occupying the space in their inimitable style certainly adds something to its desirability. An additional twin room makes it suitable for family getaways, too.

Charlotte Shooting: 4 Officers Dead, 4 Wounded as U S. Marshals Serve Warrant The New York Times

U.S. Marshals Deputy Thomas M. Weeks Jr., 48, of Mooresville, North Carolina, was killed in the shooting, the agency said in a statement. Weeks, a husband and the father of four children, was a 13-year veteran of the Marshals Service. "I have to say I make no apologies for my tears," Lyles said during Tuesday's vigil. "What makes me whole is to be a genuine leader in this community, who’s not afraid to show vulnerability when it’s necessary and needed." As Charlotte residents watched a procession for one of the fallen officers Tuesday, there was a sense that more could be done to protect the protectors. But encouraging armed self-defense also creates deep expectations in the U.S. that gun ownership is absolute, experts say.

As gunfire blasted through the yard of the two-story home next door, Chhoeun began livestreaming to Facebook from his iPhone. The Concord Gun Show offers a unique chance to network with other exhibitors and to discover the latest in firearms technology. Attendees can take part in seminars and workshops, as well as explore the vast selection of firearms, ammunition, and accessories on display.

Dozens of officers shot in line of duty

In all, four members of the task force were shot, three of whom died. The North Carolina Department of Adult Correction said in a statement that two of its veteran officers, Sam Poloche and Alden Elliott, were killed. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed that one of its deputy marshals, Thomas Weeks, was among those killed. Tuesday afternoon, she stood in front of the damaged house and marveled at the destruction. And she wondered aloud if the gunman had been sneaking around the upstairs of his house, shooting down at police officers from multiple locations. Two females who were inside the house, including a minor, were cooperating and have not been charged, the police chief said, adding that investigators weren’t pursuing additional suspects. In February, two police officers and a paramedic were killed near Minneapolis after a man, who was barricaded in his home, opened fire on the police. As the police approached the shooter, Chief Jennings told reporters, the officers were met with more gunfire from inside the home. After a long standoff, two women in the home were taken to a police station to be interviewed, the police later said in a statement. Two women were brought in for questioning after they exited the house, the police department said in a statement.

Two other people were found inside the house after Hughes was killed, according to police. CMPD hasn't identified either person, and CMPD Police Chief Johnny Jennings said Tuesday they are not charged at this time. That same month, three officers in Baton Rouge, La., were killed, and three others were wounded in what the authorities described as an “ambush.” The gunman was killed during a shootout. The president urged leaders in Congress to take action “to combat the scourge of gun violence” by banning assault weapons and high-capacity magazines and by passing universal background checks, among other measures. The authorities shut down the city’s Shannon Park neighborhood, east of downtown, on Monday afternoon after gunfire erupted in order to more easily move victims to hospitals, the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department wrote on social media.

It was the deadliest day for U.S. law enforcement in one incident since five officers were killed by a sniper during a protest in Dallas in 2016.

Charlotte community mourns loss of officers in deadly shooting: 'No apologies for my tears'

Charlotte Mecklenburg Fraternal Order of Police President Daniel Redford said the suspect's record speaks to the heroism displayed by law enforcement Monday. "I really do suspect that 2023 might be an anomaly in terms of the total number of men and women who die by gunfire, particularly given the number of men and women who were shot and thankfully survived," he said. "But it is a scary number, and I do worry that 2024 will result in a much higher number than what we had in 2023." In May 2021, he was arrested on several charges, including possession of marijuana paraphernalia, manufacturing marijuana and eluding arrest in a motor vehicle, according to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office website.

Last year, the organization recorded 378 officers shot – the highest number on record. For much of U.S. history, most states lacked laws around carrying concealed weapons. In the past 50 years, many have relaxed concealed handgun restrictions. Behind such incidents, in part, is a changing atmosphere around gun rights. Law enforcement officers themselves sometimes walk a thin blue line between lobbying for gun restrictions and having a wider conservative worldview of gun rights as sacrosanct. These events are held to provide the opportunity to buy guns, ammunition, accessories, and other hunting supplies.

In June 2012, he was arrested on charges of speeding to elude arrest. Hughes was convicted of fleeing and possession of a firearm by a felon in October 2012 and served 11 months in prison, according to the North Carolina Department of Adult Correction. Reign said she and her girlfriend stayed well back from the house where the shooting happened, watching and hoping none of their other neighbors had gotten hurt by a stray bullet. Rissa Reign, 27, was spring cleaning her house with her girlfriend, the door open to let dust and negative energy out, when she heard gunfire. Saing Chhoeun, 54, was just leaving his house shortly after 1 p.m.

The show provides the opportunity to buy supplies that are not usually available in your area. This directory lists all of the upcoming gun shows including dates, locations, and contact information. I find this to be quite helpful when I am researching my next gun purchase.

How to Get Rid of Fruit Flies and Gnats in Your House

fruit fly infestation in house

While the apple cider vinegar attracts the fruit flies, the dish soap keeps them stuck. “Mix about 2 ounces, a full shot glass, of the vinegar with some dish soap and place it in a container,” she says. For the container, she advises something with a narrow opening and wide base—think an empty soda or beer bottle. Cover a casserole dish with plastic wrap and make small openings in the top to create entrances to the trap. “Leave it open, or even add a funnel, and watch the flies come to you,” she says. Before you trap the flies, you need to clean the area thoroughly to stop them from continually breeding.

PEST PRO

Depending on the conditions, fruit flies can live 25 to 30 days. Keeping your kitchen clean and dry, throwing out garbage frequently, picking produce carefully and storing it in the fridge are your best bets for preventing fruit flies from reproducing. If you have a fruit fly problem, you've probably searched for some outlandish "miracle" tips to eradicate them. When I asked Green about the tips and tricks I've seen online, she debunked plenty of them. If homemade traps aren’t working for you, visit your local hardware store and purchase a sticky fly trap. Tossing fruit-fly covered items in the indoor trash just allows them to reproduce in your garbage can instead.

Are you irritated by an infestation of those pesky flies in your kitchen? Use a drain brush following the boiling water for added measure.

Old wine or beer trap

Don’t forget to check your trash cans for any signs of fruit fly activity. Fruit flies have been known to lay their eggs in trash cans, worsening the infestation. Even kitchen drain scum can provide them with sustenance, so don't rule anything out. Check drains, underneath appliances, inside the dishwasher or any spot where there is moisture and food debris.

He says they can also be attracted to things like beverage bottles and cans waiting to be recycled. David Shetlar, an entomology professor at Ohio State University, says that fruit flies are always around, but you're less likely to see them during the cold months. What you are making, however, is the perfect home for fruit flies. Fruit flies are about an eighth of an inch long, have red eyes (though some species have darker eyes) and are light brown with dark rings around their abdomen. The pre-made mixture uses the active ingredients sodium lauryl sulfate (a surfactant used in soaps) and malic acid (found in fruit) and comes in a stand-up jar.

Like many pests, fruit flies don’t like cold weather, and studies show that below 60°F, the already short lifespan of these flies decreases. Keeping your home cold is another option to limit the activity of fruit flies in your home, but your best bet is to limit the access they have to the fruit. Implement one of our traps and start deep cleaning to rid yourself of fruit flies. While some products like tomatoes, don’t do well in cold temperatures, most fruits and vegetables are fine if chilled.

These funds allow APHIS to reach beyond what the agency’s appropriated funding would be able to accomplish over the next few years. Spraying insecticide will provide temporary relief, but it's important to tackle the root cause. This is usually standing water found in places such as infrequently used toilet bowls, sink or floor drains, or drain pans under refrigerators. Dirty bottles and jars or containers from last night's takeaway are a magnet for fruit flies. Sunnier days can herald the arrival of annoying winged intruders in your home, and chief of these is the fruit fly.

How to trap and kill fruit flies, fast

Empty them regularly and clean them thoroughly—inside and out. For fruit that is beginning to spoil, dispose of them promptly. One of the best pest control tips to keep fruit flies out of your house is maintaining a clean house through regular cleaning, which holds true for many pests like bed bugs. To target fruit flies and their eggs while you clean, create a DIY spray for killing fruit flies.

However, it’s important to identify fruit flies correctly so you can find and remove the source of the infestation. They can follow the scent of ripening and decaying fruit over long distances. These pests feed on overripe and rotting fruit and the fermenting sugars in leftover alcoholic or sugary beverages. While fruit flies don't bite, they can contribute to the spread of disease as they frequent trash bins, pet areas and drains in addition to food prep areas. Compost piles, clogged dish drains, uncovered trash cans, leftover food, and waste can quickly become breeding grounds for flies.

At best, they’re annoying, hovering in your peripheral vision. At worst, they’ll multiply into swarms, carrying germs as they go. That’s why learning how to get rid of fruit flies is vital, especially if you love a countertop fruit bowl. “They voraciously feed on fermenting foods, sweet foods (like nectar), and yeast—compost piles are their Disneyland,” she says. The common fruit fly (Drosophila melanogaster)is known for its ability to reproduce rapidly. Larvae of fruit flies develop in moist areas where organic material and standing water are present.

In some cases, removing their “home” can be enough to drive the fruit flies away. Looking for some quick answers about how to get rid of fruit flies? About 30 hours later, tiny larvae emerge and feed on the fruit, eventually turning into pupae. Fruit flies are a type of fly found throughout the United States that often infest homes containing ripe, rotting, or decayed fruit and produce. They are known for their ability to rapidly reproduce and can be found indoors year-round.

Fungus gnats are black and more commonly found milling around the soil of houseplants, as this is where they lay eggs. Drain flies, on the other hand, are typically found around sink drains (surprise!) or garbage disposals, and they have larger V-shaped wings—they almost look like tiny moths. You’ll need to clean their respective hangout spaces to prevent fungus gnats or drain flies from laying eggs, but the same types of traps often work on these pests. Fruit flies are attracted to ripe, rotting or decayed fruit and produce, as well as fermented goods like beer, liquor and wine, say the pest pros at Orkin. They also like to buzz around trash cans and garbage disposals if enough food is present.

Deciding how to get rid of fruit flies depends on your preferences. Federal and state fruit fly quarantines do not extend into Tribal lands, but the invasive fruit flies could impact Tribal communities near the quarantine areas. APHIS consulted with Tribes on the five-year strategy in August 2023 and will continue to engage Tribes and solicit feedback on the fruit fly management and outreach strategy. He advises starting with strategies such as emptying and cleaning bins, and keeping doors and windows closed where possible, before moving on to traps and electronic fly killers. If nothing else works, you can try a chemical insecticide.

Fruit Fly Prevention Tips

Not only are they a nuisance, but flies can also transport bacteria (think Salmonella and E.coli). Sanitary efforts may be taken to prevent an infestation. Refrigerate and limit access to any fruit or vegetables within your home.

If you identify a fruit fly infestation in your kitchen, dispose of all over-ripe or damaged fruit. Any subsequently purchased fruit or vegetables should be kept in the refrigerator until the fruit fly infestation dissipates. Bacterial digesters are available to pour down infested drains. Bleach can sometimes be effective; although it is rarely stays in the drain long enough to address the accumulated slime that attracts fruit flies. While not effective at eliminating an infestation, fruit fly traps may provide temporary relief by trapping some of the adults. Once in your home, fruit flies will seek out ripe fruit and vegetables—as well as other rotting material, like trash—where they can lay their eggs.

fruit fly infestation in house

Are there extra guests in your kitchen that you didn’t invite? Are they buzzing around your fresh fruit and vegetables, or even your trash can? Maybe you left out some empty beer bottles and they’re flying around those, too? If you answered yes to any of these questions, you may have a fruit fly infestation in your home. If you spot one or two flies today and don't get rid of them quickly, you might be dealing with an infestation in a few days.

Fill a garden sprayer with the solution and apply it around the base of your home. You can spray the liquid directly onto your fruits to kill any flies that landed on them for a meal. While Spinosad insecticide is safe to use around people and animals, limit your exposure, as it may cause eye irritation and allergic reactions. Make sure to rinse your fruits and veggies before eating them. To prevent future infestation, be sure keep food storage areas clean and dry.

Empty your bins regularly and unblock your sink to remove any potential breeding grounds. Make sure you keep on top of your fruit stock, using it up well before it begins to ferment, and cleaning the fruit bowl regularly. Fruit flies love organic matter, especially items on their way to decomposing. This love for decomposing food is why it’s common to find flies visiting a fruit bowl filled with overripe fruit.

Aside from being a nuisance, fruit flies they have the potential to contaminate food with bacteria and other pathogens. To avoid a fruit fly infestation, store produce in air-tight containers or refrigerators and inspect any fruits or vegetables brought into the home. Also, establish a schedule to regularly clean drain lines, garbage disposals and any location where food waste accumulates. The tiny, yellowish, red-eyed insects are part of a large family of small flies that has about 3,000 species. Unlike houseflies, which may spread disease, fruit flies are harmless. They can live and breed in drains and garbage cans, and on damp mops and rags.

It may seem that fruit flies pop up out of nowhere, but there’s more to it than that. After you get rid of the flies, prevent re-infestation with these measures. Keeping the indoor temperature cool can ward them off or delay larvae hatching. Also known as sink flies, sewer gnats or moth flies, these non-biting gnats are light grey or tan, are around 1.5-5mm long, and their wings are feathery-looking. Fruit flies are opportunists and will sniff out any chance to find a suitable feeding (and breeding) ground to thrive in. Research shows that fruit flies can transfer germs from a dirty surface onto a clean one. Some of the bacteria they may carry include salmonella, E. Severe cases may put you in the hospital and can even be life-threatening. That old saying, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure definitely comes into play here—and it's much better to keep fruit flies and gnats away in the first place. The average lifespan of a fruit fly is 40 to 50 days—aka much longer than any of us would like. Gnats, on the other hand, have shorter lifespans, but their ability to reproduce at rapid speeds means once you swat one, there's pretty much always another one buzzing around.

Do-it-yourself fly traps for fruit flies are very easy to make, and they’re versatile, too. These homemade fly traps can be made from things you probably have at home already. Don't leave ripened fruit or vegetables—like bananas, onions, tomatoes, or potatoes—exposed; keep them in the refrigerator until the problem is resolved. Fruit flies also tend to like alcohol and other sugary drinks, so be wary of keeping things like an open bottle of wine and juice products out on the counter. Fruit flies and gnats are both extremely hard to get rid of. But if you use a multiphase plan of attack, you should be able to spare not only your produce and plants, but any headaches as well.

Did they change their seats recently? I remember it being tight but wow this was a whole new level. Also I am a 5'3" small woman so I can't even imagine a larger person dealing with that for 11 hrs. Both flights were late for what appeared to be the airline’s not having the planes ready.

My wife and I paid for seat selection to be together. My wife and I were on separate rows and the excuse they gave was they changed the plane. Also, I have celiac and asked for a gluten free meal in the ticket profile which they did not have. I booked the flight with Finnair, which made the arrangements for downloading a boarding pass unnecessarily complicated.
